BIOGRAPHY /

I was trained in Gamba viol making in the workshop run by luthier Shem Mackey, at West Dean College, England, graduating with distinction in 2019. The College awarded me a post-diploma professional development scholarship to continue my training with the French luthier Arnaud Giral, based in Bristol, and to conduct research at the Royal College of Music Museum in London to study the collection of English viols.

My process of making is guided by the study of historical sources, treatises and period instruments. Knowledge has been gradually accumulated, and disseminated through publications over the previous decades by luthiers, researchers and musicians. This allows us to test our hypotheses by experimenting with different processes of viol making, specific to the Gamba family. The Viola da Gamba deploys a stylistic diversity according to geographical origins, historical periods and musical repertoires. This repertoire of shapes constitutes a wealth of fascinating information specific to the study. Research around instruments and what it can teach us about instrument making resonates with the search for musical repertoires that musicians continue to discover through their exploration of forgotten scores.
